Give The Gift Of Time - Volunteer!
Thank you for your interest in becoming at volunteer at St. Michael's Health Centre! Our most valuable resource is those individuals who commit their time and energy into improving the quality of life of those we serve.
Volunteer Resources at St. Michael's Health Centre brings the community and citizens of Southern Alberta into our facility. Volunteers are of all ages and come from all walks of life, each brining special gifts and talents that enhance the care and well being of all residents.
What Do Volunteers Do?
Volunteers have a dynamic impact on the lives of residents, patients and staff at St. Michael's Health Centre. Our team of volunteers assist in three main areas:
Resident/Patient Care Programs: i.e. Recreation, Spiritual Care, Palliative Care, etc.
Support Services: i.e. Newspaper Delivery, Plant Watering and Maintenance, Office Assistants, etc.
Volunteer Ventures: Ladies Auxiliary, Board of Directors
Volunteers will work closely with staff, depending on their area of interest. A few of the specific roles you may play as an important part of the caring team include assistance in:
- Recreation Assistant- Helping with various recreation activities such as teas, discussion groups, outings, crafts, baking, woodworking, pool and shuffle board, etc.
- Entertainer- Using your special talents such as singing, playing an instrument, dancing, juggling, magic, etc.
- Workshop Leader- Use your expertise in any topic to share with our residents. Astronomy, genealogy, travel, computer skills, scrapbooking, etc.
- Friendly Visitor- Regularly visit, play cards, or read with the residents
- Appointment Chaperone- Assist our residents in getting to and from various appointments (No vehicle required)
- Meal Time Assistant/ Hydration Visits- Assist our residents during meal times. Offer beverages to residents throughout the day.
- Palliative Care Support
- Story Collecting Project- Use your love for history as we team up with the Galt Museum and Archives to collect stories from our residents to be preserved in the archives. This exciting opportunity offers a unique experience to learn about our local history while leaving lasting legacy for generations to come. We are looking for videographers and interviewers to make this project happen.

Volunteer Requirements
- All volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to volunteer independently. Children under the age requirement can volunteer when accompanied by a parent, guardian or teacher.
- All individuals interested in volunteering must complete an application form. Click here to download this form. You can submit your application by sending it through email to janelle.marietta@covenanthealth.ca or by dropping it off at either St. Michael's Health Centre or St. Therese Villa.
- Once your application form is received, Volunteer Resources staff will contact you for an initial interview. During this initial interview, you will be required to complete a criminal record check. (the cost of this check is accrued by the facility)
- All volunteers will be required to attend a volunteer orientation session. When a placement is made, further training is provided, where appropriate
